Dental Crowns and Bridges: What to Expect from a Prosthodontist
Dental crowns and bridges are among the most commonly placed restorations in dentistry — and among the most variable in quality. The difference between a crown that looks natural, fits precisely, and lasts for decades, and one that feels uncomfortable and fails within a few years, often comes down to the expertise of the clinician who designed and placed it.
Dr. Yo-Wei Chen, a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and Associate Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, brings specialist-level training to every crown and bridge case at Pleasant Dental Associates.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged, weakened, or heavily restored tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are recommended when a tooth has too much damage for a filling to reliably restore it — such as after a large cavity, a crack, a root canal, or a fracture.
Modern crowns are typically made from high-strength ceramic (zirconia or lithium disilicate) that is both durable and highly aesthetic. Metal-based crowns remain an option in certain clinical situations.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the teeth on either side of the gap. The neighboring teeth are prepared with crowns, and an artificial tooth (pontic) is suspended between them, bridging the space left by the missing tooth.
While bridges have largely been supplanted by implants as the preferred treatment for tooth replacement, they remain an excellent option in certain clinical situations — particularly when the neighboring teeth already need crowns, or when implant placement is not feasible.
The Prosthodontic Difference
Prosthodontics is the dental specialty focused on the restoration and replacement of teeth. Prosthodontists complete two to three years of advanced training beyond dental school specifically in complex restorative cases, occlusion (how teeth come together), esthetics, and the full range of restoration types including crowns, bridges, implants, veneers, and dentures.
For straightforward single crowns, a skilled general dentist can produce excellent results. But for complex cases — multiple crowns, full-arch restorations, cases involving bite reconstruction, or esthetic demands — the specialist training of a prosthodontist makes a meaningful difference in outcome predictability and quality.
What to Expect at Your Crown Appointment
Preparation Visit
The tooth is shaped to receive the crown, and a digital impression is taken using our intraoral scanner. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent restoration is being fabricated.
Delivery Visit
The permanent crown is tried in, evaluated for fit, bite, and aesthetics, and adjusted as needed before being cemented in place. Dr. Chen takes time at this stage to ensure every detail is right.
Material Selection
Crown material is chosen based on the location of the tooth, the esthetic requirements, the bite forces involved, and patient preference. Dr. Chen will discuss the options and recommendations with you at your consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do crowns last?
Well-made crowns placed on properly prepared teeth can last fifteen to twenty-five years or longer with good home care and regular maintenance. The longevity depends significantly on material choice, occlusal forces, and the quality of the original preparation and fit.
Is a crown always necessary after a root canal?
In most cases, yes. Root canal-treated teeth are more brittle and prone to fracture. A crown protects the tooth and significantly extends its lifespan. Exceptions exist for some anterior teeth with minimal structure loss.
Can a crown look completely natural?
Yes. Modern all-ceramic crowns are designed to match the translucency, color, and surface texture of natural teeth. With careful shade selection and a skilled technician and clinician working together, a crown placed by a prosthodontist is often indistinguishable from a natural tooth.
What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A veneer covers only the front surface of a tooth and requires minimal tooth reduction. A crown encases the entire tooth and is used when more comprehensive protection or restoration is needed.
